the queen is much displeased
It came to a head, this morning. For the last couple weekends, new neighbors have been moving into the building at an alarming rate. Lots of new neighbors. Four previously empty units are now buzzing with activity. At least two of which have pooches in their midst.
Olive LOVES people. I can not express that strongly enough. She (hearts) the human race. Period. And she's pretty down with the big dogs like labs and dobermans and even an American Staffordshire Terrier now and then. It's the little dogs that she has issues with. And when I say issues, I mean, she wants to throw down WWF Cagematch Thunderdome style. Two men enter. One man leaves.
Let's face it, she's a 12 lbs. dog with a 1200 lbs. Napoleon complex. She's been the sole canine at our building for over a year and she's gotten used to being the (extremely spoiled) queen bee. Sufficed to say, Olive has been on orange alert for the past two weeks with all these new dogs moving in. She's been acting up - very territorial and more aggressive in general.
As I took her on her morning constitutional, she got into a scrap with Sofie, the dog in the front duplex - a little 3.5 yr old black boxer/beagle mix. Sofie's owner was present and had Sofie running in the front gated area (which is cool), but it turns out that Sofie can slip through the gate bars (which the owner was unaware of and most definitely not cool.)
We pulled them apart and were both apologetic, it was just one of those things - no biggie.
So, while this run-in was bound to happen sooner or later, Sofie's got a few pounds on her (and youth on her side) - Olive came away a bit bloodied on her ear. Trust me when I tell you, this isn't her first trip to the rodeo…but at 8, she's no spring chicken. Any bigger, younger dog is gonna get the best of her.
She was pretty wound up afterwards.
I suspect she might be on the defensive with all of the pooches in the building for a while. New leashing protocols are in place for the time being (she's on the leash 24/7 in and out of the building), or at least until she gets used to socializing with the new neighbors. It sucks a little because, as a city dog, she's pretty much always leashed and my favorite thing is when she runs around the courtyard like a maniac after a walk. Still, I'd rather have her around and tethered to me, then have her lose an eye or a paw.
Then again...Olive with an eye patch...how fucking adorable would that be?
